Resilience In Tough Times: Tips From Our Coaches

There’s no way to sugarcoat things right now—it’s hard.

No matter where you look, there’s upheaval, disruption, and massive change. You may feel unsettled, anxious, upset, or overwhelmed. Alternatively, you might feel fine, but the people around you struggle.

We know how important it is to stay grounded during challenging times, especially as a leader. So, during our weekly team meeting, we asked our coaches what they personally do to ground themselves each day. We noticed that their practices fall into themes. Here’s what they shared:

Presence

Focus. If I am upset with the news, I pick one thing a day and call my representatives. Then I let it go.

Prayer. I do a morning meditation, elliptical (strength) training, and humor. I try to laugh and lift others up with humor.

Meditation. Play music. Being with my community.

Being intentional when I make my morning smoothie—a lemon water mineral concoction—and drinking it while saying a daily prayer.

Slowing down, especially when things feel personally hard.

Resting. Taking a nap when I need one.

Connection 

Spending time with friends and family. Doing breathwork.

Being with my community to support one another and keep moving forward.

Finding community and spaces where I can be supported.

Spending time with my family and friends. Finding new ways to learn different information.

Enjoying family and small moments of insight.

Being with people. Really listening to them.

Creativity & Self-Expression

Cooking and baking. “I think I made 12 pounds of hummus the other day.” And sharing my cooking with family and friends.

Teaching (and doing) yoga. And taking care of my family.

Tending my own garden daily.

Looking at a lot of art—I find it incredibly helpful.

Health & Physical Activity

Working out. Getting 7-8 hours of sleep each night.

Regular strength training and maintaining a strict, heavily regulated “social media diet.”

Doing my P/T daily as I recover from surgery.

Staying hydrated. Watching my caffeine in-take. Going to bed earlier. Petting my dog—this surprisingly grounds me.

Digital Boundaries

Staying off my phone and being mindful of which news outlets I follow and how much time I spend scrolling through my social media feeds.

Taking a break from media.

Purpose & Hope

I find my work grounds me. And remaining hopeful helps calm me down.

Bringing Our Best Selves Forward

We know we’re not at our best when we’re tired, stressed, fearful, or overwhelmed—and right now, we notice that many people feel that way. So, we ask: How do we bring something beyond our stressed selves forward each day?

Of course, there are the basics—rest, food, exercise, or stepping away when possible. But beyond that, how do we show up as our best selves, even when scared, stressed out, or overwhelmed?

The answer? We move gently. We slow down. We practice kindness toward ourselves and others. And then, we let each day unfold as it does.
